Robert Battle – Artistic Director – Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
Robert Battle is the artistic director for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater - only the third person to hold the title in its history. Originally from Miami, Battle graduated from Juilliard in 1994 and started his own dance company in 2001. From carrying a hammer in his dance bag to living at the YMCA while attending Juilliard, Robert’s path has not been an easy one. He was named one of the “Masters of African American Choreography” by the Kennedy Center, and is the author of the book My Story, My Dance: Robert Battle’s Journey to Alvin Ailey.
